Start a Compost and Fertiliser Manufacturing & Supply Business

Compost and fertiliser is used in gardening and farming: compost to feed the soil and fertilizer to feed the plants. Start your own business manufacturing compost & fertiliser.

Compost is organic matter that has been decomposed in a process called composting. This process recycles various organic materials – otherwise regarded as waste products – and produces a soil conditioner that is rich in nutrients.

Most popular types of compost
The most common types of compost are organic waste and animal manure. Now I know selling horse poop sounds like a shitty business but let’s look at what type of compost can be packaged to be resold:
Mixed decomposed organic matter – what is usually just sold as plain compost
Bark mulch & nuggets
Peach pips
Walnut shells
Fine mulch and woodchips
And if you want to: chicken manure

Sourcing Compost
As you can see from the list, this business does not require a lot of capital outside of owning a vehicle as it is mainly organic waste that is used for compost, but this does not mean that it is free to produce, while nothing stops you from making your own decomposed compost from organic matter, you may have to purchase others from the list to resell as the industries that produce the waste are aware of its value.

Fertiliser is any material of natural or synthetic origin that is applied to soils or to plant tissues to supply one or more plant nutrients essential to the growth of plants. Many sources of fertiliser exist, both natural and industrially produced.

Small businesses usually manufacture natural and organic fertilser to resell. These include plant sources and animal waste from meat processing such bone and fish meal (just don’t leave the bones outside your house to dry out).

I have mainly focused on organic materials but there are also mineral fertiliser which are manufactured or mined. These can be purchased in large quantities, repackaged in smaller quantities and resold.

There are two ways to sell these products per bag or bakkie load. Selling per bag means you have to sell more of the product, while selling bakkie load will limit you to people who use larger quantities.
