Start an Environmentally Friendly Drinking Straw Business

There is a global movement to replace plastic drinking straws with a more environmentally friendly equivalent. Whether or not you care about plastic drinking straws polluting our oceans, there is a business opportunity with large corporations trying to appear responsible with no longer making plastic straws available but they lack a proper alternative.

So far the plastic drinking straw alternatives we have in South Africa borders on the comical: paper straws that go limp, bamboo straws that cost R20 each, which (I assume) you have to carry around in your bag. There has to be a better way, a cheap way that works. It does not have to be as cheap as plastic straws, if the consumer have to pay extra the same way they are paying for plastic bags then they will just have to pay.

A free straw is still possible if it can be made with a better type of paper, straws historically were first made of paper but in the mad dash to look like they are helping sea turtles South African companies have been debuting paper straws that feels like a sheet of copy paper rolled up.

Let’s look at what alternatives have been used on a global basis:
Bamboo straws
Glass straws
Metal straws
Stainless Steel Straws

Paper straws
Pasta straws
